In 2013, the Departments of Geography and History at the University of North Alabama received an American Battlefield Protection Program grant for the Sulphur Creek Trestle Preservation Project. This project had two goals. The first goal was to expand the physical boundaries of the 1973 Sulphur Creek Trestle National Register of Historic Places nomination and to conduct more in-depth research on the battle and the site. This phase of the project also involved developing maps of the battle site and of the phases of the battle. The second goal was the development of this website to increase awareness about the history and geography of the site.

Dr. Sunhui Sim and Dr. Carolyn Barske would like to thank the American Battlefield Protection Program and the National Park Service for their support for and funding of this project. Additionally, we would also like to thank the Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area for their involvement in getting this project off the ground. We would like to thank the private property owners and the government of Limestone County, Alabama for agreeing to give us access to the site and for their interest in and support of the project. We would also like to thank Lauren Hinton, Katelyn Johnson, Jonathan Steadman and Lisa Harris for their hard work on the project.
